The Right Way to Water Indoor Plants

How much to water, how often to check, and the simple signals that tell you what your plant needs.

Watering 6 min read

The “right way” to water is not a fixed schedule. It’s a repeatable process: check soil → water thoroughly → let it dry. This keeps roots healthy and prevents rot. Use this guide as your default system for most indoor plants.

The main principle: water deeply, then let soil breathe

Roots need both water and oxygen. If soil stays wet for too long, roots can’t breathe and start to decay. The safest system is a cycle:

  1. Water deeply until it drains from the bottom.
  2. Empty the tray after 10 minutes.
  3. Wait until the top 2–3 cm feels dry, then repeat.
Why this works: A deep watering reaches the full root zone. The drying phase restores oxygen.

How much water should you use?

A simple rule: water until you see a steady drip from the drainage holes. The exact quantity depends on pot size and soil mix, so “X ml” is rarely accurate.

Small pot (4–6 inch)

Water until it drains, usually a few seconds of steady pour.

Medium pot (7–10 inch)

Pour slowly in rounds. Let it absorb, then top up until drainage starts.

Large pot (10+ inch)

Water in 2–3 rounds with short pauses so soil absorbs evenly.

Always avoid

Small daily sips. They keep the bottom wet and invite root problems.

How often should you water?

Frequency depends mostly on light. Brighter spots dry faster. Darker spots dry slowly. Use the soil check, not a calendar.

Beginner default: Check soil twice a week. Water only when the top 2–3 cm is dry.
Bright indirect light
Often needs water every 5–10 days
Medium / low light
Often needs water every 10–18 days
Succulents / cactus
Often needs water every 15–30 days
These ranges are guidance, not rules. Always confirm with the soil test.

3 easy watering methods (choose one)

Method 1: Top watering (recommended)

Pour water slowly on soil until it drains. Empty the tray after 10 minutes. Best for most indoor plants.

Method 2: Bottom watering

Place the pot in a bowl of water for 10–15 minutes, then remove and drain. Useful when soil becomes too dry and water runs off the top.

Method 3: Shower rinse (monthly)

A gentle rinse can wash dust and salts. Let it drain fully before placing back. Avoid cold water shock.

Signals to watch (your plant will tell you)

Underwatering signs

  • Dry soil pulling away from pot edges
  • Crispy tips, drooping, dull leaves
  • Plant feels lighter when lifted

Overwatering signs

  • Yellow leaves + soft stems
  • Soil smells sour or stays wet for many days
  • Fungus gnats / mold on soil surface
Important: Drooping can mean both under- and overwatering. Always check soil before acting.

Special cases (what to do)

Newly delivered plant
Let it settle 2–3 days. Water only if top soil is dry.
Plant in low light corner
Water less. Improve light first; wet soil + low light is risky.
AC room
Keep away from airflow. Check soil dryness; leaves may dry faster.
Monsoon / winter
Soil dries slower. Reduce watering frequency; keep drainage excellent.

Want a simple weekly routine?

Check soil twice a week. Water only when the top layer is dry.
